Sol leaves the game as the 4th most popular player in the past five
seasons. In my polling from S43-S47, only Carolyn (S44), Emily (S45),
and Kaleb (S45) scored higher at any point. #Survivor

I had no idea Sol was so popular. I might have ranked him fourth this
season with Rachel probably being first. Or is Rachel being penalized by
some because of the rice stealing attempt? And why is Caroline ranked so
low?

That's weird. Must be some kind of recency effect, since Sol has been
such a focus of the last few episodes. And I'm sure there's still a lot
of lingering good will toward him due to the way Rome was bullying him.

Among players from the last five seasons, the big surprise for me was
that Kaleb finishes ahead of Kelly. I guess his one moment of fame when
he played that SITU correctly still sticks with everyone (even though he
got voted out one week later). For me, I barely remember Kaleb as a
player and "what the hell" Kelly sticks out much more

I don't think anyone really cares much about Rachel stealing the rice,
which they've never referred back to, so I think most viewers have
likely forgotten about it. And anyway, I would think she'd get more
fans from that action than detractors. With Sol now gone, Rachel has a
clear lead in popularity among players still in the game, and I'm
personally good with that.

As to why Caroline ranks so low, I think it may be related to her
alliance with Sue and Gabe, who are the two lowest in popularity.
Particularly with Gabe being so disliked, I think Caroline's association
with the two of them may be bringing her down.

Ever the contrarian, I quite like Gabe (although his dance after winning the
E09 immunity challenge was off-putting). He is a smart player who has a plan
and is sticking to it.

I don't think it's recency effect because that would apply to everyone.
The way he was treated by Rome is definitely a factor.

For me, Kellie is near top of the list of my favorite players in the New
Era. I think Kaleb's popularity is also tied to Emily's. Viewers loved
their relationship and how he helped her recover from that horrible
start she had.

You're probably right that Rachel gained more fans than detractors when
she tried to steal the rice. Unfortunately, I think she gained enough
detractors to negatively impact her popularity. Some people also think
she's made stupid moves but I think that's more a case of some fans not
understanding fully the strategic side of the game. I've also seen some
claim she's being unfairly helped by production. lol

I thought that might be a possibility. I'm puzzled by Gabe's extremely
low ratings. He's playing a decent game and I can't recall him doing
anything controversial.

Wow. I'm surprised people would hold that rice move against her. It
might be different if Jeff had punished her for doing it but Jeff took
it as a good attempt to push the rules without breaking them.

No, he hasn't done anything controversial but he has done anything to
win people over. No great game moves, no great challenge wins (until
this last one) so there's nothing for people to be excited about.

Because the truth is we don't really know if there was a rule against
it. I personally think if they design a challenge that involves bags of
rice, someone during testing would have realized that there was a
possibility players could try to grab some of the rice. I bet there was
something in the fine print that said you can't take any of the rice
with you and Rachel either didn't realize or deliberately ignored the
rule to have a fun little moment.

Unless they were specifically told, how would Rachel know that the rice
was off limits? When she does a deep dive on RHAP postseason, I hope Rob
asks her about this.

IIRC, some of these polls had Rome as being more popular than Gabe. For
me, Rome was the one of the least popular players in ages. Way worse
than Gabe. Gabe must be rubbing viewers the wrong way on multiple levels
to be as unpopular as he is.

Where's Bhanu on your list? Did he not win your heart? lol

Heh! No, I’m not a huge fan of Bhanu. But he probably had more
game than the woman who quit because she needed a cigarette
and the fat kid who couldn’t get out of the water in S45.

There was (is?) a guy who made mini versions of Survivor-type puzzles
and sold them. Carson asked to meet with and ended up stealing his ideas
and starting the same type of business. Fans and past players were
pissed at Carson for pulling such a jerk move. Michele used to promote
this guys puzzles all the time and said she used them when prepping for
S40. Other players have also bought them. I don't know if the guy ever
recovered after what Carson did.

There was a woman who quit in S45? I don't remember anyone quitting
because they needed a cigarette. This does remind me of Shane Powers though.

Yes. Hannah Rose told her tribe to vote her out. It turned out she was having
nicotine withdrawal problems and was climbing the figurative walls.

She must have said that long after the show aired. I had erased her from
my mind which is why I forgot a woman quit that season. Now I'm having
flashbacks to how bad and how pathetic that tribe was.

Sol leaves the game as the 4th most popular player in the past five
seasons. In my polling from S43-S47, only Carolyn (S44), Emily (S45),
and Kaleb (S45) scored higher at any point. #Survivor
In considering my five favourite players from those seasons, I seem
Carson
Charlie
Cassidy
Cody
Carolyn
Cassidy would be in my top five as would Emily and Kellie. I'm not sure
who else I would include. I got great entertainment out of Q and Liz but
I'm not sure I would include them in my list.

I liked both of them as well but I'm not sure if they would be in my top
5. I need to see how this season plays out. Rachel and Gen are
contenders to be in my top 5.

Speaking of Kenz, I was looking at her IG recently and was kind of
surprised that she's going back to work soon. She also said she needs to
up her prices because she was undercharging. Might be time for Survivor
to up the prize money.

There is no question that $1 million doesn't go as far as it did 24
years ago. But as long as the ratings stay strong and they continue to
recruit quality contestants, the show has no reason or incentive to
raise its prize money.

That's very true. Getting players to return might be a different story.
Shows like "Deal or No Deal Island" and "The Traitors" offer decent
money for very short shoot times. IIRC, Cirie said when she did "The
Traitors" it took less than two weeks to shoot. I think she got $200K
($250K?) for winning. Not bad at all for what sounds like a vacation.

Well, for the ultimate in returning player seasons, Winners at War
(S40), they did double the prize to $2 million and I believe the minimum
payment for first boots was $25K. But aside from the upcoming returnee
season S50 - for which there seems to be no shortage of players wanting
to return - Jeff doesn't seem to want or need to bring back multi-season
classic players like Cirie or Sandra.

For the normal all-new-player seasons, it seems there's clearly no
shortage of players willing to go on the show for the usual $1 million
prize, though I get why winners like Kenzie aren't necessarily going to
quit their day jobs.
